What is Pokémon Go?
Pokemon Go allows players to join a team (Valor, Mystic, or Instinct) and under that team they are encouraged to find, train, and fight “real” Pokemon. The app was developed by Niantic and was released on July 6, 2016 for both Android and IOS platforms. It is found to be entertaining for people of all ages, but especially to those who grew up with Pokemon. A few main reasons it is so hard to put down is because 1. the app is free to download, 2. it encourages people to explore their surroundings/visit Pokestops in order to receive useful items such as Pokeballs, potions, and lures; and 3. it incorporates an Augmented Reality mode which allows you to use your phone camera and displays pokemon on your screen as if it is right in front of you in the real world.
How Is Pokémon Go used as a Marketing Strategy?
- If a Pokestop is set up at a business, it can bring in customers who are looking to add to their pokemon collection and introduce them to new storefronts that they might not have visited beforehand.
- Players can be offered discounts if they take screenshot their pokemon near certain products in the store and post it on social media.
- Pokemon Go meetups/events have lures set up to attract pokemon and along with it, groups of players. This is a great opportunity for small businesses to reach a large number of potential customers.
